So here's the other one.
One afternoon after school I was messing around with the computers in the fifth grade room with one of my classmates, Lindsey. Both of our moms cleaned the school after everyone had gone. The fifth grade teacher let Lindsey and I play computer games while we waited for our mothers to finish. For some reason I decided to write a letter to Candace H., another classmate of ours, from her favorite celebrity. I figured no one could really take that kind of thing seriously.
With Lindsey’s help I wrote the letter and printed it out. The next day at school I pretended it fell out of her backpack and handed it to her. When she read it she started freaking out saying it couldn’t possibly be from her favorite celebrity. I thought she was pretending to believe it but looking back I’m not quite sure but later we told her that we had written it.
A little while later Lindsey and I decided to write another letter, to a different girl, named Candice G. Once again we wrote it as if it was from her favorite celebrity and we snuck it into her book tub. When she found it she started freaking out, much like the other Candace. This time though, she told the teacher. The teacher found out Lindsey and I had been behind it.
As our punishment we had to write letters of apology to both of the girls and to one of the boys who we were going to give a letter to. Somehow the teacher found out about all three. After we gave them our letters we were to look up some Bible verses about deception and write an essay about what was wrong about what we did, etc. At the end of the day, both of our mothers were told.
On the way home my mom was angry that I would do something like that. When my dad got home, later in the evening I showed him my paper he had to sign and told him what had happened. He found it funny and read the paper, apparently impressed with my translation of bible verses and he signed the paper. Soon everyone forgot about it and we moved on with our lives but that is still one of the most memorable moments of sixth grade.
Of course I had not meant to make anyone upset. I had no idea either of them would take the letters seriously OR tell the teacher. It was all in good fun, and I hadn’t thought it all over before I acted. I didn’t stop to think that maybe some kids were different than me and might react differently than I would have. Now that it’s passsed I can look back and laugh about the whole thing.
I think it’s really memorable for me because I was never much of a prankster or a trouble maker. I was the good kid. Then I went and had this little bit of fun and got caught. But I survived and moved on and I’ve learned that some people are just different. Needless to say I haven’t done anything like that since then.
